Jay Gambetta

IBM Fellow and VP of Quantum Computing, IBM Quantum, IBM Research

Jay Gambetta is the IBM Fellow and the VP of quantum computing at IBM Quantum, one of the world's foremost researchers in practical quantum computing.  Following an excellent undergraduate and Honors degree at Griffith University (gaining four awards, including a University medal), Jay received a PhD in quantum foundations and nonMarkovian open quantum systems, yielding several first-authored papers. On his graduation in 2004, Jay turned his talents to the then-nascent field of superconducting quantum computing. He gained a post-doc in what was then the world's leading group, at Yale. In 2007 he moved to a similar group in Waterloo, where he gained a prestigious Fellowship from the Canadian Institute For Advanced Research (CIFAR). In 2011, he joined the IBM to build a quantum computer based on superconducting qubits. Jay has over 79 patents and 90 publications with more than 20000 Google-Scholar (GS) citations.
Jay became the IBM Fellow, IBM’s highest technical honor in 2018, and has been the VP of quantum computing at IBM Quantum since 2019. He has done vital work on quantum validation techniques, quantum codes, improved gates and coherence, and near-term applications of quantum computing. He was a driving force behind the creation of the "IBM Quantum Experience", the world-first cloud quantum computer, allowing users all over the world to run their quantum algorithms on IBM's quantum computer.
His external honors include being elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in 2014 at the age of only 35 and served as the Vice Chair of the Quantum Information Division of the APS in 2019. The latter also shows his commitment to supporting his professional community, as does his service as a Board Member of the Nature partner journal Quantum Information.
