Do’s and Don’ts at SEMICON Japan: A Guide for Exhibitors from Overseas

All marketers know that if you want to communicate effectively, you need to tailor your message and even your behavior to your target audience. This can be difficult enough when marketing in your own country, but when you have to reach out to a market overseas, the challenge can be even greater. As an exhibitor at SEMICON Japan, you will face differences in language, culture and expectations that can affect the success of your exhibit. SEMI has compiled the following list of Do’s and Don’ts based on feedback from visitors as a guide to help you avoid some common pitfalls and make your exhibit a success.

Booth Staffing

  • Have someone who speaks Japanese on staff at your booth. A Japanese speaker will facilitate communication and make visitors less hesitant to ask questions about your products and services. SEMI will provide a special mark indicating that your booth is staffed by a Japanese speaker.

Exhibit Materials

  • Prepare printed materials such as brochures and flyers in both English and Japanese. While many Japanese professionals have strong English skills, you will get your message across more effectively by having Japanese materials on display.
  • Keep your signage simple and highly visible. Use Japanese wherever possible.
  • Display and demonstrate equipment and processes to draw visitors to your booth. Also consider taking advantage of the special opportunities ( Product & Technology Releases at SEMICON Japan, Exhibitor Seminar, Innovation Hall Exhibitor Presentation ) to announce new products and drive traffic to your booth. Japanese visitors are keen to see what your company has to offer, and a common request is for more equipment, demonstrations and product announcements by overseas exhibitors.

Behavior in and around Your Booth

  • Show visitors that you are interested in talking with them:
    — Get out from behind the counter and greet visitors in a friendly way
    — Avoid talking on your mobile phone or with coworkers
    — Do not work on your computer or do other work while at your booth
    — Go to another place away from your booth to talk and check your email
  • Don’t let your body language leave a bad impression:
    — Avoid sitting on or leaning against chairs and tabletops. Stand up to greet and engage visitors.
    — Avoid chewing gum and eating while at your booth
    — Leave your booth to rest and eat

Exhibiting overseas is different from exhibiting in your own country. Visitors may have different expectations—some behaviors that are commonplace at home may be seen as unprofessional. We hope that the points above will help you get the most out of your exhibit at SEMICON Japan.
